I am a child of the 80s, Fashion of the 80s

When I started searching for 80s pictures I had a vision of all ra-ra skirts and leg warmers, of course they were huge in the 80s but I had forgotten the other fashions. Fashions I had loved, but forgotten with time. My post starts and ends with Madonna, she was a huge style icon of the 80s and 90s and this picture demonstrates what an influence she was. Everybody wanted to dress like Madonna. 

Also her hair was a huge inspiration, I remember having my hair cut and highlighted to be just like the picture above. This was when the 70s styled mullet, turned into the shaggy perm. 

This style was very Five Star inspired, they wore the jumpsuits and bat-winged or baggy shirts. I loved this style and remember buying a peach outfit Just like the orange skirt above for the School Disco !! 

Next was the sporty look, I remember thinking it was a bit masculine looking, so never bought into the whole sport thing, however I had friends who loved the whole street, sport style and lived in it. I was more of a girly, girl.

I loved the shoulder pads and waist clinching jackets, it was such a glamorous look. And had a few tailored jackets, I wish I hadn't thrown them as they are having a bit of a come back now! 

I remember getting a set of benders curlers, it's weird when I was at school my hair was dead straight, it has got curlier as I have got older. I used to spend hours curling my hair, but it usually went straight in no time, so I ended up having a Perm. I think it was at this time my love affair with hair started. I loved all the styles and hair ups, and wanted to have them all on my hair. 

My closing picture is this of Madonna with bleach blonde hair. This hairstyle sent the world hair crazy. Everybody wanted this style, I had my hair bleached to be just like it. It was revolutionary and so bold. Before this highlights and perms were the fashion, when Madonna went blonde she started hair colour revolution.

 As a hairdresser it is so interesting to look back at fashion like this and see where the trends came from. When you are living in the moment as a teenager you may think a look or style is great, but you never think of its historical value, where it will sit in future history. Although when I was 15 I also remember thinking everyone over 25 was old! So I am sure the historical value of fashion never entered my head. Wouldn't it be lovely to go back in time, maybe for a week, a bit like on Peggy Sue Got Married, just to observe!
