I am a Striking Mum, Education

When I saw that the lovely Kate from Kate on Thin Ice was approaching the subject of education on this weeks Striking Mums, I could not wait to get involved.

Education is so many different things to so many people. To me, it is my daily life. I teach Level 3 hairdressing at an outstanding college in Lancashire. Something I am very proud of. It is a vocation that has so many stresses on so many levels, but reaps so many rewards. This is the time of year when you roll back to the beginning and start from scratch with a new group of students.

Now us Hairdressers are a lively bunch, so can you imagine what the student version is like, they are crazy. But do you know what? That craziness keeps me young, on my toes and always learning.  They are super Internet savvy and worldly wise. For this reason I have to try to be one step ahead. There is nothing worse than a teacher that is behind with the times and uninspiring.

             

 Last week after their 3rd busy salon client session, I looked round at my group and thought, I have a pretty special group this year. Not only because they have immense potential. Also they have a wonderful attitude toward learning. I could see that some tasks they had to undertake had them quaking in their boots, but we worked together and they remained professional. I left for the evening feeling excited about the year ahead, and super proud. Don't get me wrong I build a bond with my students every year but last night there was magic in my salon, and every single client commented on it.

As a teacher I also look to my Sons for inspiration when I am dealing with a student no matter what the issue, I consider how I would like their teachers to treat them. As every student feels vulnerable inside, even if they don't show it, and every student is someone’s child. I aim to inspire and motivate my students to aim high, higher than they thought possible.

We are lucky in some countries for some people education is something as simple as hygiene, and keeping healthy in extreme cases how to survive.  No matter what we are learning; first steps, disconnected layers, science, cooking; knowledge is power and as the Great Nelson Mandela Said

So here are Kate's questions and my responses.

1. When was the last time you gave your brain a workout?

At the moment every day, the beginning of term is so exciting trying to think of new inspiring learning activities.

2. What would you really love to learn?

Yoga, I just need to make the time for this, but I am desperate to try it. I would love to do an English literature course, I love reading and found visiting William Shakespeare's house so inspiring. Oh and photography, I would love to lean more about this wonderful skill. I so enjoy looking at amazing photos.

3. What prevents you learning something new?

Time usually, juggling family life and work takes some managing.

4. Who can support you with your learning and how?

I think it has to come from me, like I tell my students; I can give you the tools you need for success, but its you who has to take them and run with it. 

What have I learnt from Kate's mission? I am in an extremely privileged position in life, one where my attitude and actions can change lives. This is quite a responsibility, but an amazing honour.
