Why Children Should Always Wear Helmets When Riding Bikes

Thank god I am finally blogging back on my I Mac and not trying to blog from my I phone! We have been away for just over a week and had a wonderful time. I have so many stories and reviews to share. However an incident that happened on Sunday has taken precedence over it all.

We have been to CenterParcs, Woburn forest. I will add a review of our wonderful time there later.  We had bicycles for our stay, as our lodge was quite far out. Living on a country road, Joe doesn't get the opportunity to ride his bike outside alone. People drive like maniacs on our road so I do not feel it is safe.  He has to wait for family walks to ride his bike.

When they got the bikes they argued that as there were no cars on the road at Center Parks, they did not want to wear their crash helmets. However I was insistent they wore them. And must say I was quite surprised at how many children and teens were not wearing helmets. I felt like maybe I was overacting a tad, but decided to stick to my guns. You hear to many horror stories don't you?

Joe loved the freedom of being able to ride around the village with Jack and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. On Sunday night we had visited the lodge of our good friends the Gibbons Family for a BBQ. We had a lovely evening, even though there is a huge age gap between our oldest and youngest children, they all get on so well.

They had decided to go off on a bike ride, they went off laughing and smiling and as we sat discussing how wonderful it is that they all get on so well. Then suddenly Jack burst in the lodge shouting Joe had had an accident. I ran to where he was, I could hear his screaming, when I got to him he was dripping with blood, now I have got better with blood over the years due to Jacks injections. But wounds make me feel a bit queasy. Fortunately Theresa is a nurse so was able to take a good look at him and dress his wounds.  He has a graze on his eye, a graze and bruise on his chin, two small puncture wounds where he has taken the skin off the palm of his hands and a huge wound on the back of his hand a bit like a large burn.

When we had calmed everyone down we found out there had been a collision, Joe had panicked and put his brake on. He flew through the air and landed on his arms then bounced onto his head. He is fine now, if not feeling a bit sorry for himself and his wounds. But at the time was quite badly shaken.

Thank god I was so insistent on them wearing crash helmets. It saved Joe from much more severe injuries. Every time I looked at his little grazed face I thank my lucky stars I am an over fussy mum.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Theresa for patching Joe up and to CenterParcs guest services for sending someone to take us back to our lodge, when Joe was in no fit state to ride his bike or walk.
